This workshop will be held on private property in the Crown Hill neighborhood of NW Seattle. This property was simply overplanted for the plants that were selected years ago. Some plants will be removed, some will be moved, and nearly every plant will be a talking/learning point for pruning or moving decisions. It's a great learning property for professionals who will frequently find themselves in severely overgrown landscapes.
Learn how to restore the natural shapes of trees and shrubs that have been malpruned. Malpruning may include topping, over-thinning, inappropriate shearing, and more. Included are discussions of watersprouts, suckers, radical renovation techniques, and crown restoration.

In this class, we compare and contrast common mal-pruning techniques that impact plant longevity with bona fide examples of pruning art: pollarding, cloud pruning, topiary, pleaching, and coppicing.
PlantAmnesty and the University of Washington Botanic Gardens are teaming up once again to bring a new symposium to the PNW’s arborist and tree worker community.
In our walk at Dunn Gardens, we will discuss the strong history and care of Dunn Gardens, including the Olmsted Design that has been preserved, and the vision of the future while acknowledging the past. We will identify an exceptional collection of trees and shrubs, and analyze the work and preservation efforts that go into caring for State Champion trees, and others who continue to stand strong past the age of 100. We will discuss the role that nature and humans have played in this space over the years, and we will have a good time doing it!
