Take out dead wood
Take out dead wood. Do this first and always.
Take out cross/rubbing branches
Take out the worst of the crossing/rubbing branches.
Take out suckers
Take out suckers.
Take off branches touching ground
Take off branches actually touching the ground.
Take off the worst of the wrong-way branches. Look for ones that dead back toward the center of the plant.
Take off branches that head high or low
Take out the worst of the branches that head too far up or too far down.
Take off parallel branches
Take off parallel branches to give more definition to the plant.
